•What is Infant Massage?
An ancient practice used in many cultures, passed down from generation to generation, which has become more popular now in western culture. The strokes are based on Indian and Swedish massage with principles incorporated from yoga and reflexology.
•Who massages the baby?
The parent/caregiver. The instructor shows how to do the strokes on a doll. The massage is about promoting the bond between parent and baby.
•What is the ideal age of the baby for the massage classes?
From birth to crawling. But it’s never too late to start!
•Why sign up for 5 weeks to do classes and not just read a book?
Being shown the routine by an instructor makes it easier to learn. The classes provide; time to learn, practice and review the strokes; social interaction for the parents; a chance to discuss concerns in a safe environment. The massage is a lifelong skill that can be adapted as baby grows.
•Can dads do the classes?
Of course! The price includes two adults, (mum/dad/grandparent/carer). This is a fantastic opportunity for dads to feel more involved and to enhance the bonding process with their new baby. Attending the classes builds their confidence at handling such a tiny person and to really feel included in the early months when the focus tends to be more on mother and baby.
•What makes Rachel's classes unique?
Rachel has empathy for parents and an encouraging, nurturing teaching manner. She runs her classes with openness and honesty providing a safe environment for you to learn more about yourself and your baby.
•How long does it take to do the massage routine?
As long as your baby will allow you. You will learn to read your baby’s cues and know when they want you to stop.
•What is included in the fee?
Massage oil, personalized handbook, certificate on completion and the classes, either over 5 weeks in a group or 3-4 for one-to-one sessions.
•Can older siblings learn to do massage too?
Yes. Encouraging this can assist with sibling rivalry as the other sibling feels more involved.
•Can I massage my special needs baby (premature, autism or cerebral palsy, etc.)?
Rachel will discuss any special needs on a case by case basis to gain full knowledge of your baby to ensure that the massage classes suit your individual situation.
•Can I use the massage when my baby grows into a toddler?
Yes. Rachel teaches how the massage can be adapted as your baby grows.
•What if the class is held in baby's sleep time or feed time?
There are dolls available to practice the strokes on. You are free to do what you need to take care of your baby during the class.
•Do I need to have previous knowledge of anatomy or massage techniques?
No. Everything you need will be covered during the classes.
•Should I join a group class or do one-on-one classes?
This is your preference. You may want the social interaction that a group provides or prefer a more intimate setting with just you and your baby.
•What is the best time of day to massage my baby?
Each baby is unique. During the classes you will learn how to read your baby’s cues and have the confidence to know when is the best time for your baby.
•Is oil used for the massage?
Yes. Cold pressed organic vegetable oil is used. A free bottle is included in the package. Oils are discussed in depth during the classes and information is included in the handbook.
•My baby has allergies / eczema - can I still take part in classes?
Rachel will ask for a brief medical history and discuss on a case-by-case basis to make sure your baby’s needs are looked after.
•What if my baby doesn't like the massage?
One of the major focuses of learning infant massage is to ask permission from your baby before you start. You will learn about communicating with your baby in the class and how to acknowledge when your baby is not ready.
